On A Walkabout

Two weeks ago, I signed up for the Autumn Walk Challenge on Carloyn's blog, This Grandmother's Garden. Walking doesn't require much of us, no special equipment. All you need are a pair of shoes. Sometimes walking is a contemplative time and I try to put things in order. Other times I just need to get out of the office and take a break from staring at dual computer monitors.

I work across the street from a residential neighborhood. The condos are little bungalows designed by Allen Stamm.  Yesterday while taking a mid-morning break, I turned the corner and saw this huge yucca plant with a waterfall of ivory blossoms.
Not a usual fall bloom and I gasped in surprise. Other more typical sites, included Virginia creeper, a coyote fence, and lots of berries. This little neighborhood comes to the rescue when my head starts to pound from staring at the computer too long and my eyes have gone cross.
I also frequent the dog park with my dog, Aster. She tires of me after one lap around the park and finds more playful companionship with her canine pals. This past weekend, I saw these perfectly white primroses (I think?) that hadn't been trampled over by running dogs.

I managed to walk every day, but one these last two weeks and hope that I slowed down to enjoy the ephemeral beauty of fall. Thanks Carolyn!

  1. That yucca bloom is extra ordinary in beauty and size. I haven't seen that kind of yucca here, though we have some yucca around too.

  3. I would have never guessed that was a yucca bloom. It is so pretty. And frilly. Like a petticoat. Not something I would expect from a spiky yucca! Beautiful.

  4. That is a particularly beautiful yucca bloom. So nice to get out and see nature. Certainly grounds us.

  5. Loved my morning walk in your neck of the woods this morning... I must say I feel much warmer now after viewing your images of Autumn. The anticipated hard freeze hasn't arrived here yet, but the chilly air definitely has. Thanks so much for joining in! You've brought sunshine to my soul!

  8. It is nice to see what is in your view during your autumn walk out west...such different views than here in the east. I like seeing what plants are up to out where you live. Great photos!

  9. Theta, not only did you slow down, something we gardeners too seldom do; you also captured some terrific images of autumn out West, a big treat for Easterners like me.

  11. I have a huge yucca plant that has never flowered. Seeing your photo gives me hope. :) Beautiful captures but where is Aster?

  12. Hi, yeah, the dynamic view. I wish I could customize aspects of it (colors and fonts), but I really like how clean it is. It also seems like an interesting, more-efficient way to look at it. I picked the view I thought best-suits my site, but it looks like that's just a default, while readers can look at it with the other views. I find that mildly irritating... Anyhow, it looks like your autumn is going nicely; it's starting to get pretty cold here. Time to break out the sweaters and heavy coats!

  13. I enjoyed your walk. Yucca does bloom here, but most people cut off the flowers like they do on hosta, and that is too bad.

  15. The yucca plant is amazing! I've never seen one. It's so nice to see some parts of the country with beautiful blooms while things are starting to die off our east. :)

  16. Wow, what a gorgeous yucca, especially at this time of year! Who knew they could do that so late??? Thanks for the info re: Allen Stamm. I hadn't come across him or his designs before--sounds like he really left a wonderful legacy.
